Puppy training tips? (any will do)?

How do I know for sure when my puppy needs to go potty? She constantly sniffs around in the house so how can i tell when shes just sniffing or if she really needs to go? How long can she not go to the bathroom? Also any tips for training her in any way would help.

Take the dog out at least once an hour. If she goes outside praise “good dog” if she does not go don’t worry, just take her back out in another half hour. If she goes potty in the house, pick her up and take her outside immediately and say “no” or “don’t” which ever you prefer. Repeat this action for about the next 3 months… puppies take lots of consistency to train. I recommend reading any Cesar Milan / Dog Whisperer books and watching his show on NGC.

Well if u have a dog treat and tell her/him to sit and of course it prolly won’t then u push his but own and give it a treat. Do this along time every day until it gets it.Do this with all tricks. Also u shuld just take him/her out atleast 4 times a day when they are puppies. If they know u are going to take them out they wont go. Also try puppy mats. Hope it helps.

Positive reinforcement, use it often and start ASAP! I “treat” my dog and offer tons of praise when she gets something right or poops in the correct place, etc.

She could just be smelling around, but sometimes dogs tend to pee on items and corners. I suggest whenever you come home, before you feed them, right when you wake up, and before you go to bed you should let them out to go to the bathroom. If your puppy is barking at the door it is also a sign they need to be let out side.

    Hope this helps!

The rule of thumb is they can hold it (lie while crated/overnight) 1 hour per month plus 1. If you are having problems telling the difference, try using the tethering method. (Keep her leash hooked to your belt with a simple carabiner clip) I would recommend puppy classes asap to help with socialization also.

I just got a new puppy too. What seems to be helping me with all of my doggy questions is puppy training thru Petco. Its about $100 for 6 weeks of training and my little guy is doing amazing! She’s helped us with potty training, attitude, crate training, sitting, laying down, and leadership training and we are only half way thru the class. Its a must in my opinion.

Also, potty training just takes patience and repetition. Another good tip is that puppies can only hold it 1 hour longer than they are old. (eg: 5 month old puppies can only hold it for 6 hours)

    Hope this helps!

Puppies usually have to go potty after they eat, drink, or play. When they are very young, they can only hold it in for a few hours. Here is a good link to a potty-training website:

The dog needs to go to the bathroom ever half-hour or so otherwise they will make a mess on the ground.

What we did to train our dog is we put her leash on then we took her outside, we walked around the house until she went and while walking we said ”Get Relief” or you can use ”Go Potty” to tell them what there business is then as soon as she went we praised her and gave a a cookie (dog treat) we kept doing that and soon we could just stand outside with no leash on or not following and say ”Get Relief” now Claire (our dog) is 2 years old and all we have to do is open the door and say ”Get Relief” she would run outside while we watch her to make sure she goes and when she is done she runs back to the door and we reward her with a cookie so she learns. Now when dogs get to be 1 year then you can let them out every hour because they don’t have to go to the bathroom so much.

When a dog gets 4 or older you can let them out every 2 and a half hours because there bladder isn’t like before.
