Could I please have some puppy training tips??
its been so long since we raised a puppy, and after the death of our bernese mountain dog from a year ago, my family got a st. bernard puppy about a month ago. lets just say that st.bernards are very different from bernese mountain dogs. we have started on her training but we have trouble with her learning come and stay. does anyone have any tips?? because for our old berner dog, the training came very easily. and also, our puppy is extremely friendly and she always barks at people to get their attention–but other people dont see it this way. is there anything i can do about this to??

Don’t train the pup when she is all wound up, she won’t be able to focus. Take her for a good walk first, or play a round of fetch before and after each training session. Also, don’t do it right after feeding time (A- she’ll respond better to the treats if she’s a little hungry, and B- depending on the activity, it can be dangerous to have rigorous activity immediately after she eats). Keep the sessions short, then slowly increase the amount of time depending on how well she is able to focus.
When you are training come, sit, stay, etc, use a training lead so that you can correct and guide her immediately after you say the command. “Come! Come! Come!” with no lead will NOT work, because you can’t SHOW her what that word means!! Once she has it down PERFECT on the lead, take the lead of and practice practice practice without it! With lots of practice, she’ll come around!
Ignore the barking, don’t give her the attention. Look at the ceiling, or out the window, or just keep walking away. When she stops, and sits down to start doing her own thing, go over to her and give her attention then (on YOUR terms).
Good luck! If you are still having trouble, you should consider a novice obedience class (that’s where I learned all of this!)

every time she does something right, give her a treat and praise her for what she did.

Easiest would be to enroll in a group obedience class with her – that would show you training tips and socialize your pup with other dogs and new people – I have taken 2 of my dogs and it was very constructive, even fun for me and the dog.
Ask your vet for a reference to a good trainer who gives group obedience classes – Petco schedules them too sometimes, but I like the outdoor ones at a trainer.

My step mom made this website for my dog because we are breeding her and she also gives a lot of tips on how to train a puppy, our other dog is so well trained and even trained to go to the bathroom in one corner of our yard and we have 10 acres!! Just imagine a dog that deals with his business on his own, no matter where he is he will always go in the spot you tell him. There is also advice on crate training if you’re interested. Check out http://wheatleywaterdogs.com/about_puppies it will be very helpful I promise =D
