If you house train your dog with treats, do you have to keep treating each time after they are trained?

I have a Pomeranian that is house trained, sort of. You know. Anyway, I have decided to reinforce her good habits with small bits of treat. Do I have to keep that up for life??

No. Gradually reduce the frequency of treats and your dog should stay trained. I would continue to give the occasional treat anyway, just as a reminder that she’s doing the right thing. My dog is 2 and I still give her a treat after she goes outside maybe once a week. And you can always praise her – that’s worth keeping up for life!

not every time they go after there trained but just to remind them i would give him/her one everytime they come inside that they were good it helps them to know oh yea i was good i get yummy stuf

No, certainly not. Once she is consistent, begin phasing them out slowly.

I too have a pomeranian who is (mostly) house trained.. and i give him small pieces of treats when he goes out. I think if you were to stop the treating, he/she would still obey, but would still be expectant of the treat.

    Nope.
When she’s continually goes outside, start phasing them out by giving them to her everytime few times, and then even less, then stop.

I’m teaching our new dog to go outside using praise and treats. He’s probably about a year, and completely untoilet trained
    *sigh*

We have a Jug (jack russell and pug mix) and she insists that she needs a treat everytime she come in from going potty. Of course, we also trained the Pug puppy that way too, but she is less demanding, unlike the Jug. Although, our dogs do not get a treat if they did not go potty, even though the Jug demands something, lol.

So I say yes, you may want to keep treating when your dog comes in.

No, you don’t have to do it for life. However, while she’s still figuring it out, giving her lots of treats and praise when she correct reinforces the behavior. When you know she’s got it, you then treat ramdomly, but always praise and a lot of praise, as if you just won an Academy Award. Eventually, you will be able to elminate the food all together.
