Dog Leash Training
Dog leash training is often overlooked by most owners as a crucial part of their dogs training as they don’t realise or they expect their dog to just walk well when they take them out for a walk. To correctly train your dog to walk well when he is attached to you by his leash will take some time and you’ll need to put in the work. The good news is that you are automatically programmed to take your dog for a walk everyday so you’ll have no excuses not to start this training with him.
To begin with when you first start to take your dog for his walks you’ll find that he will be overly excited and generally this is because you’ve wound him up by telling him he’s going out or even just the sound of his chain rattling as you pick it up is enough to set him off.
When he’s out he will want to pull you towards anything and everything he sees as he’ll want to sniff, explore and mark his territory. This is normal but with training it must be on your terms and not his!
When you begin dog leash training it is best that you get into your mind that you may not get very far to start out. This is because the technique which will work is that whenever he pulls you stop walking, just stop and call your dog back to your side. Get him to sit and calm down before you set off again. Now you may only make it another step before he pulls again but you must stop, as silly as it sounds with dog leash training you are teaching your dog that when he pulls he goes nowhere.
If calling your dog is difficult to begin with try to attract his atention with a treat, like most dogs he will ignore anything he was distracted by when a snack has been made available to him. Remember your dog must be fully calm before you set off again I’d maybe sometimes get him to lie down just to mix up his training a little. Always make sure that when he is back at your side that you mark this with a positive reinforcer like “Good Boy” or give him a treat with a little praise and attention.
With dog leash training try no to get into a tug of war contest with your dog and don’t yank him by the leash as you could hurt him and this won’t help your training at all. You must get your dog to acknowledge that he is better off being by your side when you are out and about on his walks ans that this is where he should be on a nice loose leash.
You should get the hang of this and remember when he pulls you just stop and he’ll soon start to get the message as long as to do this everyday and you don’t give in to him when he does start pulling. Dog leash training can be one aspect of your dogs training that can make a difference to how well he behaves. If you can get him to behave well in new surroundings then he will behave well in almost all situations.
