Every new owner should start potty training puppies as soon as possible however bear in mind that your new puppy hasn’t fully grown yet and that all puppies have smaller bladders and need to go to the toilet more often. This can catch you by surprise when they are asleep on minute and then as soon as you turn your back they are sniffing your carpet in the opposite corner of your living room before squatting for another tinkle. The crate is also a great tool when puppy house training as it helps your dog with building up the muscles he needs to be able to hold in his urges.

Housebreaking puppies is a very important part of obedience training for dogs because when you take on the responsibility of adopting a new puppy you must ensure that you start house training puppies from day 1. This may not involve using a crate straight away however it would be best if buy and set up the crate before you pick your puppy up so that you can use it before he gets comfortable in your home.

With crate training puppies if you start as you mean to go on you won’t suffer sleepless nights because your puppy could get into the habit of crying and whining all night as he doesn’t like the change to his routine of now having to be put in a crate when you go to bed. If you get the crate before he comes home then he won’t know anything different.

When housebreaking a puppy it’s good to establish a regular routine where your puppy can have regular opportunities to go to the toilet outside. Keep an eye on your puppy and try to anticipate when they will need to go, for example think when you need to go; when you first wake up in the morning or before you go to bed.

Make sure you get into the habit of been in a routine and try to stick to it and if you’re crate training it would be a good idea to let them out of their crate and get them outside to do their business as soon as possible. Treat them when they’ve finished doing their business. And most importantly be patient with them, toilet training puppies takes time but its time well spent and above all else you must be consistent!

Whatever you do, no matter how tough it can be, if they have an accident, is never give your puppy a telling off. It’s paramount that you don’t shout, beat (you shouldn’t do this at all) or rub your dog’s noise in what they’ve done as this will just frighten them which, like a human child, will affect them later in life. Also if you tell them off they may do their business away from you where it may take you longer before your noise or bare feet tells you what they’ve done.

Crate training puppies does work but there’s no magic button that makes things happen overnight.
