Crate Training Puppies

Crate training puppies can be both beneficial to you and your new puppy however some people mistakenly put their puppy in a crate just to control the puppies movements while their out of the house or if they can’t keep an eye on what the puppy is doing, or more importantly, what the puppy shouldn’t be doing on their nice new carpets!Crate Training Puppies

Also puppies shouldn’t be left on their own for long periods of time as they’ll get bored and start to chew on items which you don’t want him or her chewing on like your slippers or the mornings post.

Anyone who has tried housebreaking a puppy in the past knows all too well how easy a puppy can get themselves into mischief. Toilet training puppies is a way to help you avoid this predicament.

Why should I start crate training puppies?

As I mentioned above there are lots of benefits to both you and your puppy when using a crate for potty training puppies, the most important one been that you don’t want your puppy destroying your home and possessions. The crate will give you piece of mind while your out of the house and away from your puppy.

The other main reason we use a crate for house training puppies is that it helps them with toilet training and teaches them to not go and do their business inside your house. You basically get them into a routine of when they can go to the toilet.

Once your puppy has accepted the crate you may also notice that when someone in your house raises their voice or there’s a loud noise from your TV that your puppy runs off to his bed and may sit there shaking. This is because your puppy looks at his bed as an area where he can feel safe and secure. Crate training puppies won’t stop your puppy from ever getting scared of something but it will help cut down their anxiety when you need to leave them on their own.

When crate training puppies it is very, very important that you take into consideration purchasing a suitably sized crate for your puppy. You want him to feel comfortable inside the crate and one that gives them plenty of room to move around. If you buy a crate which is too small then you may cause your puppy to feel more stressed then before you started puppy house training and the whole point of using a crate is to build a routine, build confidence and promote security.

To be successful with housetraining a puppy I would recommend that when you first get your crate home and before you unpack it and set it up ready for use you make sure that your puppy feels like this is a reward and not a punishment. Kit out the crate with toys, treats and use a blanket they’d normally sleep on as the scent in the crate will tell them this is where I sleep.

Two things to bear in mind when housebreaking puppies;

Firstly is that crate training is not right for all puppy’s and you should always consult your Vet before moving forward.

Secondly you shouldn’t just unpack and set up your crate and only put them into it when you go to bed or leave the house, NO! When crate training puppies you should get them used to it while you are there as this will help them get used to the idea and not associate it as a punishment from you.

Good luck with your crate training and I hope everything goes smoothly for you.
