I had the pleasure of visiting a graduation ceremony for a therapy dogs group, Pasco PAWS Therapy Dogs. Therapy dog/handler teams typically visit nursing homes, schools, assisted living and rehabilitation facilities, hospitals, and group homes. In addition, the dogs work with emotionally and physically handicapped people and assist in childrens reading programs at various libraries. Some teams volunteer with Hospice after completing a special training. A dog must be at least one year old, owned for at least six months, and show no aggression toward humans or other dogs. Canines must be calm, obedient, and in good health. To become a member of Therapy Dog Inc., the therapy dog candidate must be tested and observed by a certified Tester/Observer and successfully complete at least three supervised visitations. Therapy Dog Inc. has final approval of all members. Dues are $25 per year, which includes insurance coverage ($5 million) against canine harm. To find out about the six-week free therapy dog course for dogs and their handlers, please contact Sandra S. Vaughan (352) 793-6996 or Charlotte Swindell (352) 568-7762. The course is not an obedience course. It aims at acquainting dogs with walkers, wheelchairs, and commands essential for assisting in facilities.
thelosgatosdogtrainer.blogspot.com Working with a client and her young female Aussie on loose leash walking and distractions. I use play-training as reinforcement. No collar corrections are given by the owner. When the dog forges the owner quickly turns and walks in the opposite direction. The dog learns to avoid hitting the end of the leash and that it is more fun when she stays next to her owner. The dog gets lots of play time breaks to keep her from getting bored (she is an Aussie) : I am a pet dog trainer and specialize in working with clients who wish to become a Therapy Dog team. I am a reward based trainer and do not use force, domination, intimidation, prong collars, choke collars, e-collars. If you do no support reward based methods please do not bother leaving your comments here.
