3 Tips for House Training a Dog

House training a dog is no easy task. For many dog owners, there is no better feeling of accomplishment than house training a dog. Of course, accidents are bound to happen, but if you house train your dog properly, you should rarely come home to urine or feces on your floors. If you are in need of products to help you house train your dog, such as a crate, check out stores like PetFoodDirect.com and PetCareRx. Here are three tips for house training a dog:

1. Understand Limitations

The key to house training any dog is understanding the dogs limitations in regards to how long the dog can hold off on going to the bathroom. As an example, a 3 month old puppy is generally only able to hold its urine and/or feces for approximately four hours. If you have a small breed dog, that time frame is drastically reduced because of his small bladder size. As a pet owner, you need to understand when your dog needs to go to the bathroom and if you have a puppy, that means getting up in the middle of the night to take your puppy outside to eliminate.

2. Set a Schedule

It is an absolute must that you create a schedule for when you will take your dog outside to go to the bathroom. Most people feed their dogs two to three times per day. Within 15 minutes of your dog eating, it is very important that you take your dog outside to go to the bathroom. Dogs need to understand that going to the bathroom outside is a good thing. That is why you should go outside with your dog each and every time he goes to the bathroom, you should praise your dog with love and treats for eliminating outside. Using wee-wee or puppy pads is actually one of the worst things a pet owner can do because you are teaching your dog that it is okay to go to the bathroom in the house.

3. Be Consistent

You need to have some patience in order to house train a dog. Be prepared to stand outside with your dog for 30 minutes at a time, if needed. Some dogs catch onto house training quicker than other dogs do. You need to strictly adhere to the schedule that you have created for taking your dog to the bathroom. No dog wants to go to the bathroom inside of the home, but he is left with no choice if he can no longer hold it. If you are going to be away for a couple of hours, put your dog inside of a crate because most dogs do not like going to the bathroom in their sleeping quarters.

House Training – How To House Train Your Dog

Have you been having issues with your puppy lately? You might have problems with them running around the house and chewing your shoes or even other items. Or, your dog might be drinking from the toilet. There are many forms of misbehavior, but one of the most obvious ones is potty training – a formal name would be house training. There are many benefits to house training your dog and we will go into details on how you can begin house training your dog.

Before you get started, consider the age of your dog. In case your dog is 9 years old, it will be very difficult start house training, however – it’s not impossible. If you are someone who just got your puppy a few weeks ago, we strongly urge you to train your puppy in this area. Let’s face it, with your busy schedule; you don’t need to clean up messes around the house for your dog each day.

Always give your puppy at least 3 daily breaks. This means that you should either let them out in the morning to go to the restroom or walk them. When you first take your dog home, allow them to be an outside dog for a week. This way when they do their business, it will be the first place they have done this. Now the puppy thinks it is okay to relieve themselves outside.

When you decide to start house training your puppy, always pick up a few training books to help you because this will give you many techniques on how to train your dog. After all, every pet has their own personality and what might not work for one dog may work for another. You want to give your dog as many options as possible when training them.

Another thong to consider during house training is your attitude toward your pet. You never want to yell at them if they do something wrong. In case you are frustrated with the outcome of their results, it’s a good idea to start fresh the next day instead of taking it out on them.

Keep in mind that some businesses that offer dog training will also provide special training for puppies. Try looking up a few of these places and contacting them about their services. Write down a list of the places you are interested. In case you are a busy person, you probably don’t have enough time to train your puppy.

An Effective House Training Method

If you plan on housebreaking your puppy inside of the home, we recommend setting down paper pads as their designated area. Most of these pads have a special scent to them, alluring the pup to use this as a restroom place. Often, the first sign of having to use the restroom is excessive sniffing around hallways, doors or any other places. Another sign is getting into the “potty” position. When you see your dog starting to get into his bathroom patterns, quickly pick up and bring him to the pad area. He will go to the restroom here and after some time, will begin learning and do this on his own.

Remember that you should have at least 5 papers around the home to carry your puppy to before they begin to go potty. Once he gets in the pattern of using these papers, you can go ahead and remove all the papers except for one. Once you do this, set another paper outside to be his designated area. This will eliminate the yard from looking like a mess and you don’t have to go from place to place just to clean up the messes.

It is always a requisite that you must first check the health of your dog before you begin house training older dogs. The reason for this is because it will be difficult to train a dog that has health problems. Now as you train your dog there will be changes in its eating habits. These changes may cause diarrhea but it is totally normal. Allow your dog to adjust for a week. But remember to consult your vet if the condition of your dog does not improve.

You also need to focus on how you can build good communication with your dog. Your dog needs to be comfortable with you when you are together so he will be more obedient. Because older dogs have shorter attention, you need more patience to do repetitions to get them to do what you need them to do. Never be harsh when your dog does something wrong. Punishment just develops a gap between you and your dog that you are trying to train.

When your dog is able to do what you command it to do, avoid giving him food as reward. Rewarding your dog with treats will make him overweight and unhealthy. A simple pat or hugging your dog is a much better price for doing something right. It will create a much deeper bond between you and your dog.

Just like any other dogs, always remember that your full dedication is needed when house training older dogs. Consistency is also vital for your training process to be successful. Follow these simple methods of training and your dog training will be fast and easy.
