My girlfriend wants to become a dog trainer. She has a degree in Psychology. She loves animals and can not live one day without a dog. We would like to know what are some of the best ways to get your foot in the door in the dog training field.

My Dog: Alpha training issues?

I have a 3 years old male Chihuahua, and after recent studying in dog psychology I have realized that he believes he is the alpha in our ‘pack’.

This is not good news considering that we are going to get a new dog, and he will not allow this dog into our ‘pack’, he is aggressive.

This dog is coming in a matter of months, and I need new ways to establish a new relationship with him– so that he realizes that I am the alpha.

I can tell he is very unhappy– so do any of you have any suggestions as how I can change my position with him ? I want to do it as soon as possible before the new dog comes in. Please, if you know any ways I can do this jot them down ! I really need this information.

Thank you.

I want to study Dogs, ie, dog psychology, dog behavior.. help..?

I can’t seem to find any top universities or at least any community colleges that have courses or majors in it. I have searched and searched but cant seem to find anything! help please! I know people study dogs, they trained them, and use them to figure out how they can detect cancer cells, and stuff, I have seen documentary on dogs, but how do I become those people that are studying dogs? I really like dogs, and will love a career with them.

Thoughts on Cesar Milan and dog psychology?

Does anyone else have a problem with Cesar Milan calling himself a dog “psychologist”? He has no formal training whatsoever in Psychology and probably has no clue what the different theories on learning and conditioning are. His methods don’t really have much psychological basis either, they’re more dominance based than anything. They’re also no science backing up what he does. How many studies in peer-reviewed journals has he published about his methods? none. Why? because they’re outdated and just not scientific. My opinion, he’s a glorified dog walker who is recycling outdated techniques and happens to be incredibly charismatic which makes people drawn to him.

Also, I swear if I hear the terms “calm submissive”, “balanced” “pack leader” “calm assertive” and “dog psychology” one more time…

Thoughts anyone?
I LOVE Victoria Stillwell! I watch her show all the time! :)

Is this cruel – dog training?

I read that a good way to assert that you are the alpha to your dog is to make the dog lie down on the floor, to push the dog back down and say “down!” in a firm voice whenever he tries to get up, and to keep him on the floor for about half an hour, and to do this daily for a week then every couple of days after that. It sounds cruel because you’re not actually punishing the dog for doing anything bad, you’re just forcing him to lie down almost for no reason. But supposedly it appeals to dog psychology and strongly instills in your dog that you are the alpha – and like a real dog alpha in a dog/wolf pack – you decide what happens and when, for no other reason than that you’re the guy in charge.

What do you think? Have you done this to your dog or do you know anyone that has?
I should’ve mentioned that I have started doing this because my dog has made it clear he thinks he’s the alpha. He’s bitten me and my family several times (because he’s a small dog it wasn’t bad enough to mess any of us up too much but it HURT) and generally does whatever the hell he wants and doesn’t listen.

Can I use pieces of dog food as a substitute for dog treats?

Just today, I ran out of dog treats while training my dog. I went and got a handful of dog food and started giving him pieces. He seems just as eager to please with dog food as he was with treats.

My question– is there some kind of dog psychology faux pas about doing this, or does a dog just think “food-is-food”?

Am I on to something?

dog psychology courses?

I have been working as a basic dog obedience instructor for about a year now and I am really looking to further my education in dog psychology. I do NOT want to be a vet or an animal behaviorist. I’m more looking to still train dogs, but more with dog aggression. IE: Dominance Aggression, Fear Aggression, Territorial/Protective Aggression, Dog-on-Dog Aggression. I have done a lot of reading on this and this is where I would really like to end up in my training career. Can anyone guide me in the right direction to receive the right credibility and certification(s) to do this? Any great schools that are canine based or good certification programs?? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!
I am actually looking into that right now . Thank you so much !
